Discovering our favorite hotel in Southern Tuscany

We’re very lucky to have visited southern Tuscany quite a few times in recent years. So we’ve had a chance to stay in a couple different B&B’s and hotels in the area. While they have all been lovely options, this year we wanted to try something different. We wanted to stay in the same general area, but also wanted it a little easier to get to. This last time we stayed at a hotel new to us and newer to the hotel scene in Montepulciano. Borgo San Vincenzo opened Summer of 2022 and is quickly becoming one of the best options to make as a home base for traveling around in Southern Tuscany. This 21 room hotel is small enough to feel cozy and boutique, yet large enough to have great amenities. Let’s get into what else we love about it.

Why we love Borgo San Vincenzo –

Main brick building of hotel Borgo San Vincenzo
  • It’s people! When we booked, we knew it looked beautiful, and the rooms looked comfortable. However, what we didn’t know until we got there was how wonderful the staff would be. From the first person who greeted us, to the wonderful man who helped us when we left for the Rome airport at 5am and everyone in between. Everyone we met was professional, yet incredibly kind and welcoming. We were able to practice our Italian in the restaurant (that shows more patience than you might understand 😊). We were always greeted when we returned from our day trips, and anywhere we went, someone was always making sure we had everything we needed. Once we met the owners, Scott and Shannon Kircher, it was easy to understand why the staff was so amazing. They were just as kind and welcoming, and it was clear they set the tone for everyone. Making sure we had everything we needed and willing to help with anything to make our stay even better.
  • The amenities! When planning a trip, you might think of all the meals you’ll have away from your hotel. Maybe at most you’ll think about breakfast before you head out for the day. But there is something to be said for a hotel having a restaurant. And not just a restaurant, a really delicious one. We’ve found in the past that a B&B can be wonderful, but if they don’t have options to get something to eat during the day or for dinner, it can really impact your stay. BSV has a beautiful pool, so with the restaurant and their bar, The Flying Monk, we could see spending all day enjoying the hotel.
  • The rooms! They have all the charm and beauty you want in a Tuscan hotel, but with the modern touches. Small, but important things like USB charging, heated mirrors in the bathroom, and Nespresso coffee machines in each room. Also, some different things like a kitchenette in each room. There is a full set up (plates, glasses, etc) so it would be really to put together a little something in your room. All rooms also have their own outdoor table, so we could easily see making a quick stop to a market, opening a bottle of wine, and enjoying lunch or a snack outside.

More great reason to check them out –

  • It has a wonderful location just east of Montepulciano (15 mins). This gives it a fabulous location for day trips. Towns like Pienza, Montefollonico, Cortona, and Castiglione del Lago are all 30 minutes or less. You also have fairly easy access to the autostrada to make trips to Siena, Arezzo, and Perugia all within an hour. So whether you are driving yourself or have a driver for the stay, its location gives you plenty of options. If you are driving, no need to worry about long, challenging driveways or limited parking here. Both are very easy to navigate.
  • BSV can also be an option if you don’t want to go anywhere at all. Especially in the summer months it can be a perfect place to relax. With their beautiful pool and restaurant, Il Ciuchino, you have everything you need right there. There are so many cozy little spots to relax in throughout the day in addition to the pool. One of our favorites was Il Giardino d’Inverno (The Winer Garden). Not only because they offer sweet treats and coffee there in the afternoon, but it just had such a wonderful, open feeling about it. The large windows let you enjoy the outside, no matter what the weather is like. They also offer wine or olive oil tastings at the hotel, so you can have a full day and never leave property.
  • Their Guest Experience Team is so helpful with everything from a simple dining reservation to helping plan a full itinerary. Before you arrive, ask them for their Experiences Brochure. It is filled with many options ranging from bike rentals to full day wine tours with a private driver. They will assist you with all the bookings and you can feel confident with what they recommend. We emailed them with questions a few weeks before our trip and they were so responsive. Even though we have been to the area before, we still found they had so much information to offer, and we felt very comfortable with them even before we arrived. They never made us feel like our questions were a bother or something we should already know about the area.

Other things to know when considering booking –

  • If your stop at BSV is part of a longer trip, they offer laundry services! On previous trips we needed to plan for laundry to be done and found it difficult to coordinate. This is a game changer for packing and great to know ahead of time so you can plan accordingly. They offer laundry bags in your room and for €35.00 a bag (as of April 2025) they would have it back to you in about 24 hours.
  • While some room types are only on ground level (Jeroboam Studio), some might be on upper levels as well. If you or anyone in your group has mobility difficulties, check into the room options and reach out to them to be sure you can be on the ground floor.
  • BSV offers water (still and sparkling) in each room, free of charge, during your stay. It is sustainably sourced, using their on-site filtration system. If you’re use to grabbing a bottle from the mini-fridge to have water during the day, you’ll want to bring a water bottle to fill. Their water bottles are glass and not the size you’ll want to carry with you.

There are countless reasons to love Borgo San Vincenzo. They are very reasonable for the area, but with the feel, amenities, and attention to detail of a very high-end boutique hotel. No matter how long your visit, you’ll want it to last longer and will already be planning your return before you leave.
